The "Looking Up" Movement
As far back as I can remember into my childhood, I always looked at the sky. The way that the clouds flew overhead made me feel a sense of serenity. I used to imagine that if things ever got too tough on Earth I would have a magical getaway in the clouds where I could escape and relax. This concept didn't fade away as I grew older. I still have a sense of serenity when I look into the sky and cloud watch. I remember growing up, that people would always talk about cloud watching and finding messages in the clouds. However, it seems in the past years with the dawn of more and more technological advancements, that we have stopped engaging in cloud watching, and stopped engaging nature as a whole. There are many movements going on in today's society that are about the environment. There seems to be a cause for everything, from saving an endangered species to global warming. Yet still these problems persist because not enough people are involved in these fantastic causes. The problem isn't with the causes or the issues that they seek to resolve. The problem is with the connection that we have as a society with nature. In a world of technological dominance, we dont look up anymore. We are glued to our computers, "smart" phones, and televisions instead of engaging the world around us. Companies have been intelligent in marketing their digital products by convincing us that we are "exploring" or "connecting" when we use their products, but really we are just getting lost in a world of gigabytes and download speeds. This is where the "Looking Up" movement comes into play.I'm not advocating that we abandon our technology. Technology definitely has its place in our growing world and lives have been made easier and better because of it. However, I think it is a shame that we have forgotten our connection to nature. The causes that educate people on the environment and try to help save our planet struggle not because they are not worthy causes but because people dont feel connected to the environment anymore. In my art exhibition, "Looking Up", I will be showcasing a series of images that I took of clouds in the sky. The purpose of this exhibition is two-fold; on one hand it is showcasing abstract forms arranged by nature. I have found clouds to be a way of merging together abstraction and landscape while tapping into a collective memory of cloud watching. The second purpose is to reinvigorate society's connection with nature. To expect people to help the environment we need to remind them how much they care for it. That is the main problem with the lack of support for these causes surrounding the environment; people have lost the connection that they once had with it. Through my exhibition, I will ease people back into cloud watching and hopefully when they leave the exhibition they will look up and be reminded of the feelings that are tied to engaging nature, feelings that no machine or technology can ever replace. This exhibition has its feet firmly planted in both the world of art and the world of environmentalism. I think that the art world is a world that even in the digital age still engages people and helps to get them thinking about greater issues. It is my goal to use the art world as a bridge between a society that has forgotten about its connection with nature, and nature itself. I also think that if people remember how strong their connection is with nature they will be inclined to help causes that are tied to the environment. We need to reinvigorate the connection before we can expect people to respond and I think that then we can truly see things in this world "looking up". BECOME A FAN ON FACEBOOK!
